Christian Education
Christian Education at Saint James AME Church is the umbrella for all Spiritual learning at the church. If you want to grow in your faith and the knowledge of God, we encourage you to join us for the opportunities of learning at the church. Christian Education encompasses Sunday School, Bible Study, New Members Class and Discipleship Sessions. The Christian Education Department guides the congregation through the liturgical calendar with opportunities for worship and study. The Christian Education Department provides AME study materials to every member and will recommend other resources for rich and engaging study for the growth and maturity of every believer.
Bible Study
Bible Study is an opportunity for every believer to read the Bible in community and learn about its teachings for everyday life. In addition, Bible Study should be interactive, conversational, and offer practical life application of the Bible. It can be topical or by canonical book. Saint James AME Church has a virtual weekly Bible Study on Wednesdays at 6:30 pm.
Sunday School
Sunday School (Church School) helps us to understand the Bible as the believers’ sacred guide to living a Godly, holy, and righteous life. Sunday School engages historical context and theological commentary so that hearers may learn the voice of God through biblical stories and characters. Sunday school should be divided into different age groups and intentionally based on group and pedagogy for structured teaching. In short, believers learn more about the Bible, popular characters, stories, and fundamentals of our faith. It is an opportunity to uncover areas of deeper study for the Christian Education Department. Sunday School meets in-person at 9:30 a.m. except in July and August when it meets virtually at 9 a.m.
Discipleship
Discipleship classes are for those who have a spiritual grounding of the faith and are looking to engage in deeper study and dialogue. They are an opportunity to go deeper in biblical study and reflect further in theological study on major themes of our faith with real connections to societal life. Discipleship sessions also train believers in evangelism and church leadership. They are offered sporadically throughout the year and on an array of topics as deemed necessary in our spiritual and social climate. Be sure to sign up for our newsletter to stay informed on future classes offered.
